Building Nonprofit Resilience During Tough Times

Why Capacity Building Still Matters

Economic shifts, funding delays, and rising community needs can quickly push nonprofits into survival mode. It’s tempting to pause long-term planning and focus only on keeping the lights on.

But this is exactly when capacity building becomes essential.

At the Nonprofit Lifecycles Institute, we often describe nonprofit capacity as a sturdy table supported by four legs: Management, Governance, Business Model, and Administrative Systems. During times of uncertainty, like a government shutdown, it may not be possible to strengthen all four legs at once. But that doesn’t mean you abandon the table.

Instead, zoom in on the leg that is struggling—perhaps the Business Model—and ask: What’s working? What’s not? What could be reimagined?

This is a moment to get creative. Maybe it’s time to explore earned income strategies, deepen relationships with individual donors, or rethink how services are delivered. Tough times can be a catalyst for innovation, not just a disruption.

Lifecycles Thinking in Unstable Times

The Lifecycles model helps nonprofits understand their developmental stage—Start-Up, Growth, Maturity, Decline, or Turnaround—and what capacity investments are most critical. Periods of uncertainty can expose vulnerabilities that may have been in the organization all along.

Organizations in the Growth stage, for example, may need to shore up systems and staffing to maintain momentum. Those in Turnaround might use this time to reassess priorities and rebuild trust. No matter the stage, capacity building is the path forward.

What Capacity Building Looks Like Right Now

Even with limited resources, nonprofits can take meaningful steps:

  • Zoom in on one leg: Focus on a single area—like financial strategy or board engagement—and strengthen it.
  • Scenario planning: Prepare for multiple funding outcomes and build contingency plans.
  • Mission clarity: Reaffirm your purpose to guide tough decisions.
  • Staff development: Cross-train team members to increase flexibility.
  • Community connection: Stay visible and vocal about your impact, even if services are scaled back.

Resilience Is Built, Not Borrowed

Capacity building isn’t just about growth—it’s about resilience. It’s what allows nonprofits to weather storms, adapt to change, and emerge stronger. Rough patches, like the recent government shutdown, may may slow the flow of resources, but it doesn’t have to stall momentum.

In fact, this may be the perfect time to reimagine how a nonprofit organization operates—starting with one leg of the table. Whether the organization is navigating Growth, Turnaround, or simply trying to stay steady, our tools and services are here to help build nonprofit resilience.
