5 Ingredients for a Successful Turnaround
- Committed Champion: Turnarounds require an internal champion who is deeply committed to the organization’s potential. This champion becomes the change agent, taking personal responsibility for repositioning the nonprofit.
- Symbolic Breaking Point: Successful turnarounds often stem from a specific organizational action that serves as a symbolic breaking point. It’s the moment when everyone says, “We can never let that happen again.”
- Internalization: This term refers to understanding a situation well enough to internalize its lessons. It involves a willingness to face problems with an attitude shift and genuine comprehension.
- Strategic and Administrative Competence: Beyond understanding the cause, an organization must possess the skill—both strategic and administrative—to navigate the turnaround successfully.
- Commitment to Behavior Change: Implementing change is challenging, but it’s essential. Leaders must model behavior change from the top down, setting an example for the entire organization.
